THE MAKING OF “FALLING”

On set at the "Falling" Video Shoot

On set at the "Falling" Video Shoot

Dear Family, Friends, Fans and Supporters!

“Walk With Me” has been doing well and I am continuing to promote the project. I have been performing, writing, producing, and recording new music and developing myself as an artist over the past few months. The journey has not been easy. I have had some serious ups and downs in the process, but it has all lead to a deeper drive, focus and determination. They say sometimes that life gets in the way. I’m learning each an everyday that through the personal and business challenges that I have experienced this year, that life is simply “LEADING the way.”

I am entering a new phase in my creative journey and continuing to press on. I am preparing to release a new single I call “Falling.” This song is very special to me because it symbolizes the very essence and simplicity of falling in love. It is an organic, soulful and romantic tune that simply makes you feel good. I will be officially releasing it as a single in early September, but I wanted to give you a very personal glimpse into the process of making the video. I am also excited to share that I have collaborated on a remix version of the song with an extremely talented poet by the name of Tshombe Sekou who has blessed the track with thought provoking and profound lyrics. You will be hearing more about the making of the song, my collaboration with Tshombe Sekou and the official video release in the weeks to come.

The journey is not over. I invite you to “Walk With Me”“I promise you’ll enjoy.”

-Bless, Always, Rae.

Budweiser “Battle For The Crown” Showcase Recap

IMG_1013

Rae w/ Friends & Supporters

Wednesday, July 28th was an incredible night. I performed on the SOBs stage with 10 talented artists selected for the Busweiser “Battle For The Crown” Contest. The Event was a chance for one lucky artist to win the opportunity to open up The Budweiser SuperFest with some of the most talented Artists in the business. On Monday afternoon, when I got the call  that I had been chosen, I was so excited and honored. It didn’t even matter to me what happened in the end.

I got up there and did my thing. Even though I didn’t win the crown, I felt like a queen for being among such incredible talent. For me, it was all about the experience. I had so much fun and look forward to many more opportunities to get out there and share my music.

The Internet…Not So Bad Afterall

wealth_network

On my mind…

So I was reading an internet article on Yahoo.com called “This Is What It Sounds Like When The Internet Cries” by Chris Willman & Lyndsey Parker. The article chronicles Prince’s (The Artist) vacillating opinion about the Internet as it relates to music. There was a time when Prince was fond of the Internet and what it could do for an artists career. However He was recently quoted in England’s Daily Mirror as saying, “The Internet’s completely over. I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else [digitally]. They won’t pay me an advance for it, and then they get angry when they can’t get it….All these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can’t be good for you.”

I’m not sure why an artist as successful as Prince feels this way, but it got me thinking about the drastic changes the industry has undergone since the Internet revolution. There is no doubt that major labels have been on the decline since rise of Independent labels, YouTube, Myspace, Facebook, etc. As a matter of fact, it appears to be an independent artist’s market. More and more artists are taking the reins in developing their own careers and even major label artists are making a switch to benefit from the indie market. While the Internet revolution has opened the doors for artists that may never have been known otherwise, it is still a very expensive, risky and difficult thing to undertake. Of course the Internet may have it’s downside but I have to say, a lot of amazing talent has been discovered by way of the Internet. It also seems as though we live our lives according to the Internet. Globally it has become a way of life. And for anyone who wants to share a thought, idea, and their art it is a necessity. There is a lot of power and momentum that can be gained from the Internet. It almost seems abnormal not to see someone either on their cell phone, surfing the web or updating their FaceBook, Twitter, MySpace all the other trendy social and media websites.

While too much of a good thing seems like a short-lived phenomenon, something tells me that this is not a temporary change. It’s like the recession. There are so many legendary businesses, that never saw the day when they would have to close up shop as a result of a failing economy, but they are now gone and will never recover or so affected that they will never be the same. The growth and dominance of the Internet has had a cataclysmic effect on so many industries, particularly the music industry, changing the way we purchase, create, distribute, market and make music. It has essentially changed the game. While I believe the game will keep evolving, there is no doubt that the Internet has put the Industry into a totally new trajectory. If used correctly and strategically, it can either make or break you. Why even fight it? Why turn your back on it now. In a capitalistic society, I don’t see a day when it will never be “about numbers.” After all, how can you truly measure success without examining the numbers? Even an unsigned Indie artist relies on the numbers. But then again, when your not Prince, and your not use to a big advance and people fighting over your music, the Internet certainly doesn’t sound so bad after all.

“Walk With Me” – THE PREQUEL

What’s Up World!

I was doing some house cleaning and found some DVD’s that weren’t labeled. I decided to pop them into the MacBook Pro to see what discovery I had made. Low and behold, I was happy to see some footage from my voyage to Nigeria, West Africa at the end of in 2008. That trip had so much meaning to me. I credit that experience with giving me the courage to pursue the dream of creating my own album project. It was my last day and my cousins decided to make it a memorable one by taking me down to Ilashe Beach. Of course my cousin brought his trusty acoustic guitar and we went back to basics on this. In the video footage you will see me and my cousin, Chima Nwoga, free-styling and jamin’ on the beaches of Lagos, Nigeria. It was a free-spirited moment and I will never forget how hard it was for me to get on that plane back to NYC. I had already been in Nigeria for 2 weeks but it wasn’t long enough. It would be months later when I would finally start working on “Walk With Me”. Chima ended up producing four tracks on the album: “Rhythm of Love”, “It’s Over, I’m Gone”, “Another Story” & “Moving”. “Let You Know” didn’t make it to the album. It was one of the very first songs I ever wrote and recorded when I first got into the game so it definitely has sentimental value. Check it out!

Happy Father’s Day!

Father's Day

Leo Walker w/ daughters, Rachel, Zenda & Son Dwight

I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge all the amazing father’s of the world. You don’t often get the recognition you deserve. Your role is equally as important as our mothers. You provide a balance that is very much needed in the growth process.

I personally feel very fortunate to still have my father in my life and I am very aware that I am blessed. He has a somewhat quiet and peaceful demeanor while my mother is a fire-cracker. I have dubbed him the silent supporter. He was the bread-winner and is still the voice of reason. He worked two full time jobs all my life to put a roof over our heads, take care of my sick brother who passed away in 2004, and send his children to the best schools. He also worked hard to pay for art, dance, gymnastics and music lessons because he wanted us all to be creative and cultured. He worked so much, that would you believe that I have never seen him in jeans or sweat pants? I’m not kidding, I have only seen him wearing work clothes (button down shirts, slacks & ties). I am humbled by this especially when I think of how hard it is just to have one job. He is retired now but I notice that he never ever complained about work. He simply did what he had to do to provide for the family.

There are so many people in the world who did not know their fathers or who no longer have their fathers around so I do not take my blessings for granted. When you are a child, you don’t even realized the level of sacrifice and selfishness that comes with raising children to survive in such a cruel and cold world. I really have to take my hat off to you and salute you Dad. You are genuinely loved and appreciated for everything you have done for us and everything that you are. LEO WALKER…THANK YOU!

STARTING OVER

IMG_0461

Aruba at sunset taken from the shoreline.

Hello World! It’s been a while since I have connected. I have been extremely busy working with a new band, The Agency and performing. The past month has been somewhat of rollercoaster ride. I have endured some major life changes and it almost feels as if I am literally starting over.

I had the opportunity to go on vacation at the beginning of June which gave me some time to really think about my life and my direction. What better way to reflect and rejuvenate ones self than on an island surrounded by crystal blue waters with nothing but the whistling sound of the warm Caribbean wind as the soundtrack. We get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life that we sometimes forget what it feels like to be alone in our thoughts.  And to add to it, I witnessed one of the most beautiful weddings ever on the island. The couple, family and friends were so warm and loving that I was very touched by everyone’s spirit and enthusiasm. For an artist, there is no greater inspiration than love and I had a front row seat to love in it’s most organic form. What a blessing!

It was quite refreshing but somewhat short lived. Of course as soon as the trip came to a close, it was back to hustle mode. I have wasted no time. I’m back into my busy routine, but a slightly different person. And isn’t that what life does. It twists and turns and introduces you to new things, places, people and ideas. I’m newly inspired. And even though some of my daily routines and responsibilities have not changed, I am certain that I have.

Lena Horne, (June 30, 1917 – May 9, 2010)

Lena-Horne-dies-at-age-92-006

Legendary singer, actress and dancer, Lena Horne died on Sunday, May 9th at the age of 92. Lena developed a career in Hollywood at a time when blacks were still struggling for equality in America. She managed to accomplish so much in her career even though she was constantly denied roles because she didn’t fit into the stereotype of blacks that Hollywood wanted to perpetuate.

Heavily involved in events during the Civil Rights Era, Lena showed that she was more than an entertainer. She was socially conscious and not afraid to join the struggle. She joined the March on Washington, where she spoke and performed on behalf of all the major Civil Rights Organizations including the NAACP, SNCC and the National Council of Negro Women, worked with Eleanor Roosevelt to pass anti-lynching laws and was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

Lena was more than a women. She was and still is a true inspiration. She pushed through the politics of Hollywood and proved that she was not just a talented artist, but a women of purpose. While the world mourns your passing, we also celebrate your life and legacy. RIP Lena Horne. We love you.

Dear Mom – A Mother’s Day Tribute

Cynthia Walker

Rachel's Mom, Cynthia Walker

How do you thank the women who not only gave you life but did and still does everything in her power to protect your life?

I am aware of all the things you have done and yet I am amazed at your unwavering strength and love. Even at times when I was selfish and too ignorant to really understand how deep your wisdom was and is. I am humbled at all that you have endured in your life and I am still in awe of how you managed to do it all.

Even now, you continue to protect, push, challenge and nurture me. You are an amazing wife, mother, sister and friend. You don’t hear it as often as you should, but if there is any doubt in your mind, allow me put it to rest. You are truly an inspiration and a blessing. I will continue to work everyday to make you proud.

Grandma,

Even though Alzheimer’s affects your memory of me, I know that I am someone who you loved during your life and your love is still with me. At 92 years old, you are still a sassy, witty and smart matriarch and I am so proud to be your granddaughter.

Love, Always,
Rachel

To all the wonderful mothers of the world,

Thank you for laying the foundation and molding current and future generations. The world acknowledges you on this day but your impact is far greater than any one holiday and it can never be measured on any scale. We respect and love you all.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

“It’s A Small World” – Originality vs Cloning

Christina-Aguilera-nc08The whole Lady GaGa verses Christina Aguilera debate has sparked a firestorm of controversy over who is the best. People do this all the time. They compare people who have similar taste, image and music. I think it’s healthy to acknowledge how we all influence each other. But now it’s becoming a debate over validity, relevance and ownership and the poor music  itself is getting lost in the shuffle.
There are a plethora of legendary artists that we can say borrowed, imitatedLady_Gaga_693586a and sampled other artists. Artists are respected for being originators. People want to know that whoever they portray themselves to be is really who they are; not a borrowed or cloned image of someone else. It’s no secret in music and hollywood that your worth is determined by your relevance and when you are “hot” you are really on fire. But, heaven forbid you fall out of people’s good grace. It’s as if all the glory goes away in one instant and people forget your initial impact on the world. People abandon you and chalk up your success to an isolated period of time. They say everything has an expiration date. And maybe this is true. People may not love you forever.

I have been curious about the public’s response to Christina’s comeback and I have been shocked to read that many people are offended by her return; even going so far as to accuse Christina of copying Lady GaGa. It’s as if people forgot the tremendous and lengthy career of the still youthful and relevant Christina Aguilera. One thing that I can say is that I am really impressed by the passion that both of their fans have expressed. I don’t know a single artist who wouldn’t want their fans to go to bat for them like this. This is what you call the “ride or die” fan. Loyal to the bone.

gallery_main-lady-gaga-beyonce-telephone-video-photos-03092010-01Recently the same debate has been sparked with Beyonce’s new video for “Why Don’t You Love Me”. People are comparing her 50’s Vintage style in her video with previous videos like Ashanti’s “Good Good” and Lady GaGa’s overall image. Sure the themes are exactly the same but check out how different each video is executed,  not to mention how different the songs are. (Check out Beyonce’s Video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKqIgqJEH-o and Ashanti’s Video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kM6w3_ljSwo. Again, the die hard fans defend Beyonce’s creativity while others criticize her heavily even going so far as saying that she has no talent or depth. I mean, woah people. Really? Come on now. Let’s not be ridiculous. If you don’t like Beyonce’s music or any of the ladies I have mentioned, you are entitled but to actually say they have no talent is just plain mean. Sure it would be cool to say that you were the first to do something but if it is at all noteworthy, you better believe that you won’t be the last to do it either.

See, at the end of the day, the world is smaller than we all think and we are all fighting to stand out. There is no denying the similarities ingrace-jones42 style and music but isn’t it fair to say that this is going to happen from time to time. I don’t believe it is anyone’s real intent to clone someone else’s image. As a matter of fact, most artists do everything they possibly can to be original and stand out amongst their peers. But like I said, the world is much smaller than we think and we can’t deny how GREAT all of these women are. There are going to be overlapping ideas and imagery among artists and why is that a bad thing. Why is it being made out to seem like a spiteful, purposeful, attempt to take away each others glory. I mean let’s really look closely at these amazing women: Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Gaga, Grace Jones, Madonna, etc.. They are incredible entertainers, singers, songwriters whose talent is undeniable.

I think it’s interesting how male artists are sometimes compared but never to the extent where things get out of hand. Ne-Yo style and voice and Chris Brown and Usher’s performance/dance style and even Justin Timberlake’s swagga are often compared to Michael Jackson’s but there was very little backlash for it. Trey Songs is being dubbed as the young R-Kelly but no one is hating on him for the obvious R-Kelly influence in his music and style.

trey_d_re1ne-yo-1michael jackson hatr-kelly-2008-05-20-300x300

Listen…these women are mega-stars in the industry. There is more pressure in the industry for women to maintain a strong image. I think it’s great to analyze and compare. Within those comparisons, you are going to find similarities. The industry is small and sometimes ideas will be recycled. I don’t think anything is wrong with that. I don’t think there is anything wrong with being influenced by someone else’s style. There is a difference between plagiarism and para-phrasing right? While originality is more refreshing and highly respected and the ultimate goal, try living your entire life doing things that not a single person on earth has done. Try rocking a look that no one else on earth has worn. It sounds pretty impossible to me. The one thing that is more impressive to me than anything else is that all of these women have carved out a life of happiness, tremendous success, wealth, fame that few people can say they have accomplished; “cut to scene in the “Why Don’t you Love Me” video where Beyonce is dusting off a total of 16 Grammy’s (she’s not even 30 years old yet people…let that image marinate in your mind for a little while). They are doing what they love and what they are passionate about and look at all the success that it has brought them. The most poignant similarity that I can see in them all is fearlessness, fierceness and raw talent. How many people actually live their souls in the way that these women are doing. All I can say is “get it ladies…work it on out and uhhhhh….how about a collabo Honey B, GaGa, Madge, Christina and sprinkle some Grace Jones in the mix while you’re at it? Hmmmmm wouldn’t that be something?

Celebrate Earth Day 2010

earth-planetToday is Earth Day. It has been a 40 year journey of bringing awareness about environmental issues that affect our lives here on earth. It’s hard to live in an industrialized world and always remember to be earth friendly, but I think that it’s important to respect that which has given us the ability to thrive and live. We can’t just take from the earth and not give back. Even if you don’t believe in Global Warming, you can’t deny air pollution, landfill trash, and the draining of natural resources for human consumption. Let’s take a moment to reflect on some ways that we can respect the earth: (Energy efficient lighting, eliminating plastic water bottles, recycling, etc.). Celebrate Earth Day in some way…everyday.

Rachel’s Birthday Wish List

TAURUS (April 21 – May 21)

Patient and reliable, warmhearted and loving, persistent and determined.

225px-Taurus.svg

As my birthday approaches, I can’t help but think about how blessed I am to see another year. I’m somewhat relieved considering all the madness that goes on in the world.  Life is truly a gift, privilege and honor and I believe it’s everyone’s responsibility to live it to the fullest. With that being said, I have decided to create a birthday wish list that reflects my desires, hopes and dreams in no particular order:

  1. Travel: I have been blessed with the opportunity to travel around the world. I have been to Russia, The UK, Ghana, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Aruba, Bahamas, Jamaica, Amsterdam and Canada. This year, I hope to visit one of the following countries: India, Brazil, Italy, France, South America and Japan.
  2. Family: I have family all over. The UK, Nigeria, London, Canada, Florida, Boston, California and Jamaica. I would love to bring everyone together at some point for a good old-fashioned family reunion over some traditional West Indian cuisine, a pitcher of Sorrel and of course we can’t forget some Beres Hammond and Sanchez playing in the background. Good vibes…fun times.
  3. Friends: There is no substitute for a good friend. Good friends are simply good people who are compassionate, supportive, great listeners, honest and genuine. They come few and far between. I feel blessed to know who my friends are. My wish is for us all to remain close and I pray that we continue to achieve what we want out of life.
  4. Good Health: The body is a temple and in order to accomplish all the things we wish to accomplish, it is imperative to be kind to it.  I hope to remain consistent with my workout and health food regimen.
  5. Godchildren: I hope to spend more time with my Godchildren, Nya Langlais and Madison Smith. These girls are absolutely beautiful and like their mothers, I see so much potential in them. I want to be there for them as much as I possibly can.
  6. Music: I’m so excited about my current projects. Even though I already write, arrange and engineer my music, I am looking forward to getting more involved with composing and producing. I am excited to begin the process of building music from scratch. I am already working on a pop/rock track with my mixing engineer, who is also a very talented musician. I’m so excited!
  7. Band: There is nothing like the live music experience. I look forward to working more with live musicians and developing a band as I pursue touring opportunities.
  8. Shopping: It’s not what you think. Granted I love a nice new pair of fabulous shoes, I’m more interested in shopping some of the music I created to established artists. My dream would be to place a song with one or many of my favorite recording artists.
  9. Duet: It was on last year’s Christmas list but I still want that duet Ne-Yo and/or Maxwell. I already have the song. It’s called “Let Me” and trust me, it’s the bomb.com. So Ne-Yo and Maxwell…have your people call my people…wink-wink!
  10. Goals: As I continue to pursue music, I hope to also check off a few additional items on my list of goals. They say, once you have accomplished a dream, you just keep dreaming bigger and the list gets longer. Well, it appears to be true, at least in my case. There is much more work to be done.

Shout-out to all my Taurus babies! Tell me what’s on your B-Day wish list this year.

Women Changing the Game

erykah_badu_new_amerykah_cover

March 31st marked the end of Women’s history month but the past few months have seen a major up tick in female fierceness particularly in music and the arts. I am especially struck by the diversity and fearlessness that these women are bringing to a male dominated industry.

107484_music-video-beyonce-feat-lady-gaga-video-phoneFrom Beyonce’s 6 Grammy Wins, The rise of Lady Gaga, The Gaga and Honey B Collaboration on “Telephone” & “Video Phone”, Monique’s Supporting Actress Oscar win for “Precious”, Gabourey Sidibe’s nomination for Best Actress in “Precious”, the rise of Nikki Minaj to Erykah Badu’s controversial video for “Window Seat.”

I want to take a few moments to speak about Erykah’s video for her single “Window Seat”. Now, don’t get me wrong folks. I do not claim to know everything but as a woman in music, I am always seeking inspiration and paying attention to what’s hot, different and new. This entry is not about likeability, nor do I claim to condone behavior that is deemed illegal but I am particularly struck by her motivation for expressing her art in this controversial way.  I found it easy to draw something even deeper from it than what we see on a superficial level.

Erykah explains the meaning behind the song and video very eloquently.  She says: “Window Seat is a song about liberating self, shedding layers, creating a new self out of everything that you’ve learned., creating new possibilities and evolving.” She says that it is usually at the point of evolution when generally a person’s character is assassinated by the group as a result of “Group Think”:  Group Think occurs when people are afraid to express themselves out of fear of being ostracized by the group, so they simply follow along.  She says that there is no way to protest group think because it’s innate but that by defining it you can find who you are, what you are suppose to be and your place in it.

The video for “Window Seat” was shot like a guerrilla style, social experiment that ultimately proved her very point about Character assassination when it was finally released. Walking down the path of JFK’s route, Ms. Badu marches along stripping herself layer by layer of her clothes until she is fully naked, where at the end of the route she imitates being shot and falling to the ground.  The controversy manifested itself on several different levels: she did this in real time on the crowded streets of downtown Dallas, with families and children around.; she was nude, she is a black women, and she walked down the assassination path of the beloved JFK. The nerve! Many balk at and criticize Badu for involuntarily subjecting innocent bystanders and young children to her nudity.  While I can completely understand why people are offended, I found it to be extremely captivating. Like most people, I too was wondering why she would do this before I knew the real meaning and symbolism in her actions.  While I think that Ms Badu’s decision to go fully nude in public was bold, risky, and extreme, I admire her gusto. She put her own fears aside to do something different, already fully aware and conscious of the “Group Think” backlash. Knowing immediately how easy it would be for society and people to ostracize her for creating a new self and evolving. Now, the average person would not dare do this and I respect that too because frankly, it was out the box. Was it attention seeking? Yes, but not in the same way that we are use to seeing controversy play out. Badu has always been eccentric and revolutionary in her dress, music and ideas. While Window Seat appeared bold even for her, I found her self-expression to be very genuine and not a far stretch from the vulnerable and ever evolving artist we have come to know and love.

moniqueSimilarly, In Monique’s Oscar acceptance speech, she thanked her husband for instilling in her that “sometimes you have to forgo what is popular, in order to do what is right”. Monique conquered a very unsavory character “Mary” in the film Precious, breaking the world’s perceptions of her as only comedic actress.  She took a risk and played a character that forced her to address her own childhood abuse.

gabourey-sidibe-oscars-2Gabourey Sidibe continues to amaze people with her upbeat, confident attitude while most expect her to be as sad and unhappy as her character, Precious.  Many are now on the hunt to help Gabourey lose weight because it’s hard for people to believe that a women her size can actually be happy and confident. Much to Hollywood’s “group think” dismay and surprise, Gabourey is happy with her size and it doesn’t appear to be a deterrent as she continues to land movie roles, adding fuel to her budding acting career.

I’m sure if you look really closely at your life , you can think of moments when you may have been subjected to “group think” backlash because you decided to forgo what was popular to do what you felt was right, for you. I can think of a few moments in my own life where I too was assassinated for going against the grain, not sitting back and settling with being agreeable, speaking up for myself and bringing new ideas to the table. Sometimes you just have to be willing to go there or you will never really know your full potential. My cousin A-Nadyah, brought me to a revival service at Calvary Baptist Church, Queens, NY, a few weeks ago and the guest pastor, Freddie Haynes, drawing from a familiar hip-hop reference stated, “There are 3 types of people: 1. People who make things happen. 2. People who watch things happen and 3. People who wake up saying, ‘What happened?’”

Clearly all of these women know how to make things happen and I consciously made a commitment to myself years ago to live this way as well. I would rather be awake, conscious, disciplined and an in control participant than a reactionary participant, allowing others to dictate my truth.

Too Invested In A Dream? Never!

Artist, David Patterson. A gift from my dear friends KDN & Gus Langlais

"Weeping Willow": Artist, David Patterson. A gift from my dear friends KDN & Gus Langlais.

I was flipping through the radio station on my way to work today and stopped when I heard a conversation on Z100 about a contestant on American Idol who was eliminated and didn’t handle it very well. The Radio Hosts went back and forth about how intensely the contestant reacted and whether or not he was too invested in his dream. They argued about whether or not a 16 year old should be so invested in his/her dream; so much so that their world literally crumbles when someone rejects him/her. Should the contestant have subjected himself to the type of scrutiny and potential disappointment that comes with auditioning for a show like American Idol? They played a sound bite of Simon Cowell flippantly eliminating the contestant while also comforting him with the words “there is nothing wrong with you”. The contestant began to cry and you could hear the pain and confusion in his heart and mind…after-all he was told by the most controversial judge that he didn’t do anything wrong. He was far too emotional to realize that even though he was being eliminated from the show, no one person could ever take away his gift and his desire to pursue and live out his dream.

Well, I could certainly relate to this young man. I also tried out for American Idol, made it to the 2nd round of auditions, and performed for the executive producers. I was told “…great look, beautiful voice, but too serious.” I’ll always remember how confused and devastated I was at that very moment.

Sure, I cried after my audition. I was extremely hurt and slightly discouraged. I felt so vulnerable and my mind forced me to relive that moment over and over and over again. I must have heard the phrase “great look, beautiful voice, but too serious” echoing in my head for a full year after my audition.

But you know what, the experience made me even more serious. Serious about continuing to sing; serious about practicing and getting better; serious about finding my identity; serious about learning how to write songs better; serious about how to get my music heard; serious about becoming fully independent; serious about creating and putting out my own album by any means necessary; serious about not relying on anyone or anything to define my destiny.  Now don’t get me wrong folks. I didn’t just pull out the superwoman suit with a great big S on my chest. Oh no-sir-ee! I cried worse than an infant baby cry quite a few times along the journey…LOL. Oh yes! I’m women enough to admit it. Sometimes when you are so passionate about something and care about it so much that you don’t have the words to express it….you just cry.

So let it out. Cry! It’s okay. You are a young man with so much time to keep on working towards your dream. Never let anyone make you feel like you can’t do it and don’t let anyone stop you from trying. People aren’t always going to offer affirmations or even validate you. Affirm yourself! Know that you are strong, talented and capable. You may experience future disappointments along the way but don’t let it break you. Bask in the light of your own faith. Be confident and always willing to learn! Your opportunity to live your dream will always be possible as long as it lives inside of you.

A Valentine’s Day Special – Because I Heart You!

valentine-day-flowers

Ahhhh V-Day…not to be confused with D-Day, although well….ok…I’ll just leave it at that…LOL. Break out the chocolates and roses. The holiday of love and romance is here! Flower retailers, chocolate makers, card stores and restaurants are all stocked up and ready to rake in the dough. Couples all over the world are making plans to out-do last year’s festivities.

Some single folks may be getting a tad bit annoyed every time “Valentine’s Day” is even mentioned. Let’s face it…Valentine’s Day is much more fun when you have someone to share it with. Some are completely rejecting it all together with the belief that February 14th is just another day on the calendar and nothing more; that we don’t need a contrived holiday to justify love in our lives.

Say it with me now….Ahhhh V-Day. Well, no matter where you stand, V-Day doesn’t have to be D-Day. Love can expressed in various ways. Let V-Day be a simple reminder to acknowledge the important people in your life and most of all, let true love find its way to you.

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, I would like to share a song I wrote called “Number One”.  When I wrote “Number One”, I thought about what I believe love should really be: supportive, romantic and unconditional. I decided to combine my lyrics with the music of one of my favorite Grammy Award winning artists, Maxwell. “Number One” was recorded to Track #4 off of Maxwell’s album Embrya, “Drown Deep: Hula.”

“Number One” is now available as a FREE download here.

For my people who just got out of a relationship or who have chosen to say good-bye to love for the moment or who are simply over it, I have not forgotten you. I dedicate my newly released single, “It’s Over, I’m Gone”, off of my debut album “Walk With Me”. “It’s Over, I’m Gone” is a declaration of self respect and inner strength. When people don’t meet you half way in a relationship (be it romantic, business or in friendship), you have to love yourself enough to walk away once and for all. In any situation in life where there is no reciprocity especially when you find yourself giving your all, don’t be afraid to let go.

“It’s Over, I’m Gone” is now available for ONLY .99 Cents on iTunes and CD Baby.

Cheers & Love Always,

Rae

Black History Month – More Than The History Books

BlackHistoryMonth 2

While February has been officially declared the month to commemorate black history, I’m proud to acknowledge that one month could never fully capture a history so rich, resilient, vibrant and powerful.  Black History is American History! There is no shortage of successful leaders who are paving the way for generations to follow and carve out their own destiny.  There is no shortage of inspirational figures in education, business, medicine, engineering, politics, art, music and entertainment.

We must not forget that Black History extends much further into the community than just the figures that have made it to the history books. It is the history of our parents and forefathers who worked hard in their native countries and/or in the United States to make a better life for their children and grandchildren. It is the story of our brothers and sisters who against all odds, achieved success in ways that our parents or caretakers could only dream of.  It is also the story of our challenges and even failures that shape who we are and what we are striving to become.

As we continue to acknowledge and celebrate Black History this month, let us be reminded that Black History is more than what is written in the history books.  We are living our history. Let’s make each day count!

GRAMMY FEVER!

grammy-logoThe 52nd Grammy Awards airs this Sunday and I am pretty excited. I think this year is going to be extremely interesting considering the turns that the music industry has taken. I’m most excited about the way that top female artists have dominated the airwaves and the charts. Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Kelly Clarkson, Jasmine Sullivan, Ledisi etc….It’s a women’s world this Sunday and I love it!

Below are some categories of interest:

Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Dance Recording, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, Best R&B Song, Best R&B Album, Best Contemporary R&B Album, Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, Best Rap Song, Best Rap Album.

Taylor Swift

The categories that have me on edge are:

Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. The competition: Beyonce, Melanie Fiona, Lelah Hathaway, Ledisi and Jazmine Sullivan. WOAH! Lot’s of fierceness going on over here. Biting my nails…

Record of the Year. The Competition: Beyonce, BEP, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift. Ummmm yea! What can you say. All are fierce.

Now don’t get me wrong. I am also super excited about the fellas. I see my boo Maxwell has been nominated in three different categories including: Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Song of the Year for “Pretty Wings” and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for “Love You”. It will be interesting to see how Jay-Z does up against Drake in the “Best Rap Song” Category and against his wifey Beyonce in the “Best Rap/Sung Collaboration” with “Ego” (Beyonce/Kanye) and “Run This Town” (Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye). Oh, and how about Mr. Jamie Fox with this club/radio favorite “Blame It”. Didn’t it feel like a party every time you heard that song?

Now we certainly can’t forget about all the anticipation surrounding the red carpet and the live performances. What famed designer will all the female artists rock on the red carpet? How far will Lady Gaga go both on the carpet and on stage? Who will be the best dressed? Who will have the most memorable performance? Who will win the most awards? I’ll be watching along with you all on Sunday.

I can hardly wait! Who do you want to see win?

A Salute To Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

mlkI want to take a moment to acknowledge the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Although one day out of the year has been dedicated to his memory and work, I would be remised if I didn’t mention the infinite impact his life and legacy has had on American and the present.

I often wonder if Dr. King could have imagined the election of a black President either during his time or in the future. Many of us were shocked ourselves when Barack Obama emerged as a leading contender for the Presidency of the United States. In my mind, I believe that Dr. King saw this defining moment long before our own nation did. He always had the greatest hope for America even during our countries most challenging times.  His hope and faith was so strong that he was willing to sacrifice his own life to move our country towards peace.

Even decades after his death, his relevance continues to gain potency as we continue to heal from past wounds. He is an iconic figure for racial peace and justice in our country but I believe that his message and principles can be applied globally while the world continues to struggle with racial, religious and political unrest.

I salute you Dr. King. Thank you for being so brave, fearless and hopeful while working towards your dream for America. We love you.

No Resolutions Without Evolution!

Rae's EvolutionHappy New Year Everyone!

Wow! Another year gone by as swiftly as the wind, leaving us lamenting over the status of our to-do lists. It is hard to believe that 2010 is finally here. What did we accomplish in 2009? Did we accomplish enough!?!

Whenever you set goals for yourself, you are challenging yourself to accomplish them. You anticipate but you really don’t know just how intense the challenges will be. But you set them anyway because as scary as it may seem, your desire to succeed is unwavering. You learn along the way that you can’t accomplish your resolutions without addressing your own evolution.

Admittedly, there were times in 2009 where I felt like the year wasn’t going by quickly enough. But for me, 2009 year was a series of world-wind experiences that tested me in ways that will remain interesting and unforgettable. And boy do I know a little something about challenges. I released a full length, independent album project during a recession and I live in New York City! What on earth was I thinking? Even if I did realize what I was getting myself into, I don’t think I would have done anything differently. I’m a stubborn Taurus. My theme song was and still is Kanye’s “Can’t Tell Me Nothing”. I was going to put this album out no matter what.

There were times when I felt like I was a contestant on the Amazing Race, trudging my way through an obstacle coarse with subtle or no clues to help me along the way. In some instances, it was like being locked in a dark room feeling my way through the dark for a light switch. This project was the most financially, physically and emotionally taxing thing I have ever done. And yet, despite it all, there were so many triumphant moments that overshadowed the challenges.

This past year, I realized how no one challenged me more than myself and no one ever could. I saw, sought and conquered my dream of releasing my own album project on my own terms. And now that I have accomplished this goal, the sky’s the limit. The only thing left to do at this point is to aim higher and higher.

2010 is all about taking lessons learned in 2009 and applying them. Becoming better. Writing up a list of goals is step one. Being the person you want to be is a critical part of the process and will ultimately determine how effective you are with checking off your list of goals. Be prepared to evolve as you set out to accomplish your goals this year. Most of all, don’t be afraid of the eminent challenges that will come your way. They are a crucial part of your evolution. Don’t just answer the call…embrace “the process of continuous change to a higher, more complex and better state”…embrace your own evolution.

Bless, Rae.

Rae’s 2009 Year In Review

2009-1

MY GOODNESS!

2009 was quite the year for Politics, Music, Fashion, Movies & Pop Culture. I couldn’t possibly cover everything in great detail so I have decided to create a list of “Stand-Out” Moments that really caught my eye.

POLITICS

inaugural_roll_f_05The Election of Barack Obama: Whether you voted for him or not, this moment is historic. President Obama is not just the first black President but he is the first President of color in the history of our great country. Whenever I see him, Michelle, Malia and Sasha, I can’t help but smile and be proud. Black, beautiful, successful smart, strong, selfless and loving. And they had to round things out with the cuteness that is Bo. Simply fab!

The Confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor:USA-COURT/NOMINEE

In May of 2009, the nomination of Judge Sotomayor by President Obama to the US Supreme Court came with much controversy but she was finally confirmed in August 2009. What a proud moment for women and both the Latino and minority communities.

MUSIC: Discoveries, Releases and Comebacks

BeyonceBeyonce’s “Single Ladies”: Love her, hate her or love to hate her, Beyonce is a bad mamma-jamma! She made you look, listen, and shake your bootie to “Single Ladies” and if you weren’t moving you were talking about it. Hands down one of the hardest working women in the biz…there is no denying her fierceness!

Rachel Walker, “Walk With Me”: You didn’t think I would not include myself on my own site did you? For real though “Walk With Me” is my first project and one that I am very proud of. If you’re looking for some ‘Sweet Soul’, you need this album in your ipod. “Walk With Me” is available on iTunes and CD Baby!

The Return of Maxwell: Aside from Maxwell being my boo in my head, I was blown away by “BLACKsummers’night”. After an almost 8 year hiatus, he claimed the #1 spot on the music charts. His organic and sensual voice coupled with musical richness on his album is so refreshing in the age of over-producing, voice coding and Auto-tune. And he definitely made sure that he matched his sound with some shall I say “interesting” visuals in the “Bad Habits” video. Yea…ummmm…ok then Maxwell.

Sade’s “Soldier of Love”: What can I say. “Soldier of Love” is stunning. Very engaging, romantic, and raw. Sade’s sound is consistently breathtaking. I can’t wait to hear more of the album when it drops in February 2010.

Whitney Houston: Hooray-hooray the Diva is back! Her story reminds me of how incredibly human we are no matter how much success we have attained. Seeing her triumph over all of her challenges is encouraging. All the best Whitney.

Michael Jackson 2Michael Jackson: The sudden death of Michael Jackson was devastating. Say what you want to about him, no one can deny his musical genius. His voice, creativity, philanthropy, choreography and musical influence will live on forever.

Despite his many troubles in life, no one can take away the profound imprint he has left in the world of music and entertainment.  Rest in peace King!

Jay-Z’s “Blueprint III”: People talk a lot about this and that, but Jay-Z continues to prove his relevance on his latest project. I like how Jay-Z keeps it 100% hip-hop, gimmick free and real.

Susan Boyle: Now whether you are a fan or not, her story is undeniably magical. Su-Bo demolished all the stereotypes of what an artist should be: model-perfect, skinny and young. She is breaking all types of records and barriers and proving that it is never to late to live a dream.

Lady GaGaLady GaGa: She is bold, over the top, and borderline crazy…and I luv it! She is so bizarre that I don’t always get it but I can admit, she has an amazing voice and is a very talented musician. Not even the elaborate masks can hide all that talent.

Britney Spears: Wow! She has made it out of the storm. For a minute we thought that she was certifiably crazy but she bounced back and proved that despite a lip-syncing tour, she is a force to be reckoned with. Happy endings can be interesting too hugh?!?

Alicia Keys’ “Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart”: I really dig this song and it was definitely one of my favorite singles this year. I like the breathy and vulnerable sound in her vocals coupled with the heavy percussion. It sounded like a movie soundtrack or the score to a dream sequence. Anyone who has every been brokenhearted can relate to this one right here.

“WOMP-WOMP” MOMENTS…A.K.A.: Disappointing Moments of 2009

Rihanna & ChrisThe Chrihanna Debacle: I was highly disappointed in this domestic violence case. Abuse of any kind against a man or women is wrong. In the same breath, it brought domestic abuse into the light. I hope that both Chris and Rihanna can recover from this. After all, they are young and gifted and have time to learn from their mistakes. There should be NO taking sides on this issue.

Kanye West at the VMA’s: I’m a Kanye fan but what he did to Taylor Swift was just wrong. I get his passion but to disrespect another artist who rightfully deserved the accolades she received was just plain unacceptable. Kanye, I dig your passion but don’t forget that there are artists from other genres who you may not be friends with who also deserve their time to shine. Still luv you though boo-boo.

The Back-breaking, Wallet-straining Recession: WOMP-WOMP! NUFF SAID!

MOVIES:

princess-tiana 2“The Princess & The Frog”: Finally! Disney’s first black princess. My heart is overjoyed for all the little black girls who now have a princess to identify with. Even a grown women like myself, was tickled pink to see Princess Tiana in all of her black beauty. Even though she was a frog for the larger half of the film I still say kudos to Disney!

“The Twilight Saga”: I have to admit that I am super late with this. I just didn’t get all the chaos surrounding these movies but I finally saw the first two installments and now I kind of get it. The movies were ok. I did find myself breathless and swooning like a 16 year old over the two male leads, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. I get it now…but I still can’t decide if I’m Team Edward or Team Jacob.

“Precious”: I read “Push” by Sapphire a few years ago and it was extremely intense and disturbing but in a very profound way. I was nervous about the movie but found myself deeply touched by the characters and the message. This is not just a black film. This is a human film. I recommend everyone see it no matter what your ethnicity is.

FASHION: The Year of the Blinged-Out Bodysuit

Rihanna Beyonce - Bodysuit lady-gaga

Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Beyonce nailed this look from head to toe. Every time you saw them in concert or in a video, they were wearing one. Now ladies, as fabulous as this looks in costume, please don’t wear this look to the club. I don’t care if you have a body that would make Sasha Fierce look shabby…DON’T DO IT!

HAIR: The Year of the LaceFront Wig, Partially Shaved, Bald & Pixie Hairdo’s

beyonce-ego-featuring-kanye-west Rihanna-Shaved Lady GaGa - Bow

Cassie - Shaved Halle Berry amber+rose+face

A women’s hair is her crown! My hat goes off to these ladies for representing all these styles to the fullest whether we thought it was just way too much, way too little or just plain crazy! Rock-on my sistahs…Rock-on!

2009 gave us oh-so-much! What do you think was THE “Stand-Out” moment of 2009?

Rae’s Holiday Wish List

christmas_gifts_clipart

Hello Everyone!

The season for family, friends, food, shopping and traveling  is finally here! Retail and online stores are busy with customers checking off their gift lists and children everywhere are writing up their wish lists for good old St. Nick. It appears that not even a recession can change the spirit of the holidays. I’m certain that this year is tougher than previous years but it will take much more to eliminate hope.

I wanted in on the action so I have decided to create my very own ‘Holiday Wish List’. Here it goes in no particular order:

1. A Navigation System. I have had some “interesting” times getting to and from neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn, New York by car. Makes me miss the New York City Subway system.

2. An Actual SALE at the Apple Store. Do they come out with new gadgets every week just so that they don’t have to have an actual sale? As soon as you purchase your discounted i(product) you are 2 models behind and soooo not cool anymore.

3. A duet with Ne-Yo. He is one of my favorite male artists. It would be so cool to collaborate with him and I have the perfect song I wrote for us to sing….OK NE-YO! SO CALL ME IF YOU READ THIS! OK BOO-BOO. LUV U!

4. Viva la Discounted MetroCards for Students. Isn’t raising the subway fare enough? Now the MTA is going to make it more difficult for NYC kids to get to school. Have a heart MTA!

5. Paved Roads in the NYC. Boy has my car been through some drama this year with all the nooks and crannies in the roads. I hope that it can make it through another 6 months. Talk about a concrete jungle!

6. Continued Album Success. I lived my dream this year with the release of “Walk With Me”. I have been touched by all the feedback and support. I’m excited about all my upcoming shows and all the projects I am working on for 2010.

7. America’s Patience. Let’s not loose faith in President Obama so soon. Did we really think that all the country’s problems would go away after 100 days. I mean really!?! As long as he continues to do his best to make our country better, I’m still on board.

8. World Peace. I know it sounds like a predictable, beauty pageant answer but it is extremely relevant. There is always a price to pay in war no matter what side you are on.

9. Social Networking Site Consolidation. I have lost track of all the accounts I am active with. One status update a day feels more like ten!

10. Debt Elimination. Another predictable one but I know you are all saying a collective “AMEN” with me on this right here.

So tell me…What’s on your Wish List?

Bless, Rae.

The Show MUST Go On!

rae 3

Recently, I had the privilege of being a judge at the “Strut Ya Stuff” Talent competition at the Harlem School of the Arts Theater. I was excited to be a part of and support an event that allowed me to encourage the youth. While watching each contestant perform, I was overcome with emotion; I couldn’t help but remember how I got my start in the arts. I was impressed by the range of talent and courage displayed by those young artists. It was an opportunity for me to pass on the love and encouragement that helped me to choose the path I am on today.

Following the judging of the contestants it was my turn to perform. As the music came on I began singing the first few lines of the single “Open”, the CD with the background music began to skip. It became obvious that I would not be able to sing the song as rehearsed. At that moment, I remember thinking to myself, “really, is this really happening right now?” but my thoughts were interrupted when an audience member began to shout, “Sing it acapella!”

I replied back “You know what, it looks like that’s what it is gonna have to be”. So after taking a deep breath and letting go of my initial frustration, I motioned for the audience to clap with me. I started singing the song. My voice carried throughout the packed theater with a fierceness and determination that overshadowed the initial shock of the technical mishap. I felt strong. My quality of my voice was being heard in its most organic and pure state and I could hear myself opening up. It didn’t matter anymore that the audience couldn’t bop their heads along to the track…I allowed the melodies, my passion and words to carry me through and the audience let me know that they were with me the whole way.

I closed out by encouraging the youth to continuing nurturing their talent and to continue to live their dreams. I told them to use this performance as a lesson, that no matter what happens or how hard things get, “the show must go on!” The words just came so naturally to me. I realized that my performance was not just a promotional opportunity but also an opportunity for me to be an example to the youth; to let them know that challenges come to you at the most vulnerable moments and they force you to dig deep within yourself to find the solution and rise up. They come so suddenly, that there isn’t always time for you to process the disappointment and fear.

There is no better time to channel strength and courage but it all begins with believing in “you.”

“Another Story” – A Closer Look

behind_scenes

Singer|Songwriter, Rachel Walker gets direction from Neil Anthony Bacchus, Stealth Productions, on the set of the “Another Story” Video Shoot in Harlem, New York.

The Real Story Behind “Another Story”

Greetings Everyone!

Check out my debut video for my single “Another Story” on my debut project “WALK WITH ME” dropping this Summer.

“Another Story” is a very raw and stripped down acoustic track that explores how people sometimes struggle with their inner feelings and weaknesses, while trying to remain strong on the outside. “Another Story” addresses the day to day struggles of trying to balance the desire to achieve success while simultaneously attempting to maintain a sense of self. Along the way we learn how lonely the journey can be even though it’s a road that is traveled by many. The song was purposely designed to be musically organic to accurately represent this vulnerability.

“Another Story” is particularly dear to my heart because it is a musical and lyrical collaboration with my first cousin Chima “Golden Axe” Nwoga, whom I was blessed to vibe with in Nigeria, West Africa, in November of 2008. I remember falling in love with the melody instantly when Chima would play it on his guitar. Chima is a talented and accomplished Composer/Producer and Performer, (in Nigeria & the UK), who graces “Another Story” with his amazing acoustic style. We have been talking about collaborating for a while and we finally got a chance to work on four tracks for my debut album. I am so excited to officially share our work with you in a few weeks.

“Another Story” is a song that anyone who is striving for a specific goal in life can identify with and I hope that you enjoy it’s purity and overall REALNESS. Feel free to leave your comments and feedback on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0WF1FsWYSg

Rae

Welcome to rachelwalkeronline.com

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to rachelwalkeronline.com.

With this site I want to offer you an opportunity to get to know me as an artist and writer. A lot of hard work and thoughtfulness went into the creation of this site and I am so excited to introduce it to you.

The past year has been both extremely challenging and rewarding at the same time. The journey of defining myself as an artist has been one of self-discovery, unwavering courage and fierce determination.

I began singing in girl groups, which eventually led me to recording hooks for various hip hop artists in Brooklyn, NY. Like a sponge, I absorbed so many song writing, recording and engineering techniques along the way. I’ll never forget the day that I wrote my first song and what I felt like while listening to the playback. I was fascinated with the process and what it was able to draw out of me. I guess you could say that from that point on, I was hooked, and no matter how difficult the learning process would eventually become, I was compelled to continue learning, growing and honing my skills. Through the wire, I have used my experiences to put together a collection of songs that best represents the human spirit.  I have been reminded this past year how important it is to stay true to self and follow my heart.

I was fortunate to travel to Nigeria, West Africa in November 2008 to participate in my cousin’s wedding in the Imo Village. I was far from the hustle and bustle of New York City life and everything that came with it (my job, bills, my studio etc.). I woke up at 5:00 AM on Tuesday, November 4th (Election Day), voted at 6:00 AM, and boarded a plane to Amsterdam before the results of the election were even announced. I couldn’t even believe that I was on my way to the motherland. But, during my two week stay, I gained a great deal of perspective. Surrounded by the love of my family as well as the overwhelming beauty and organic landscape of the village, something came over me. My mind was clear and my body was relaxed. It was my first trip to Nigeria and thanks to the hospitality and love of my family and friends; I was treated like a native Ebo statesman. My cousin’s wedding was beautiful and it reminded me of why I continue to endure all the challenges that come my way. Love. I genuinely love creating music and while the pressure of being successful in the industry is constant, having the creative freedom and ability to do things on my own terms has ultimately sculpted me into the well-rounded artist that I am today.

Writing songs is like creating a fantasy or writing an entry in your diary. It can express your hopes, dreams, and desires. It can reveal your thoughts and expose your reality. It most certainly challenges you to dig deep inside yourself and the world around you for insight and inspiration. There is a quote that I use in my email signature that reminds me everyday why I have chosen to take this path in music:

“To expose feeling is to risk exposing your true self. To place your ideas, your dreams before crows is to risk their loss. To try is to risk failure. But risks must be taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.” – Author Unknown

Using this quote as my mantra, I persevere on, and it is my passion that has led me to the creation of my debut album, “Walk With Me”. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to work with an amazing Engineer and talented producers, who have been extremely supportive of my efforts. I look forward to introducing them and our amazing collaborations within the next few months.  I am also grateful to those local artists, producers and engineers who worked with me in the early days and took the time to teach me what I know and put into action every time I pick up the mic.

“Walk With Me” has truly been a labor of love and has taken a long time to pull together. I want to thank my family, friends, music lovers and my business associates for all of your support and for being so patient. I promise that it will be worth the wait.

Bless,

Rachel
